Subject: Proposal for ReCreating(Her) Magazine
•Summary/Abstract – Brief about what you plan to do
It has come to my attention that there is a need for
magazines that accurately represent, support and encourages the African
American women. The magazine will be titled
ReCreating(Her); A Literary Journal. The magazine will feature historical,
social and cultural elements to inform and reinforce the importance of heritage
culture and the history of African American women. ReCreatingHer; A Literary Journal, will feature, original poems,
essays and articles by African American authors.
•Introduction/Background – Background on the issue
The early 1990s brought on a surge of black
magazines that critically addressed issues of race, class and culture. Since
then magazines like Emerge, which
first began under Time, Inc. and later taken over by BET corporations was
merged into with Savory. While Savory continues to address the issues
of the day, it has taken a more politically black America than one that
seriously handles the issues. Another magazine that was taken over by BET
corporations, Heart & Soul fell
into a decline and then to bankruptcy until its return to Vanguarde Media
publishing.
•Statement of Need—justify why the company or
organization needs your idea
The major black magazine publishing companies include
BET, Johnson Publishing Company and Earl Graves Limited. BET corporations
published a number of publications that survived for a while but ultimately
failed or were taken over by other companies. Johnson Publishing Company
publishes the most wildly recognized black magazines, Ebony and Jet. In recent
years Ebony and Jet have been falling into printing only a certain aspect of
the African American experience. It has begun to settle into the habit of
writing like everyone else and focusing more on celebrity news than the issues
of the average American population. There is then a need for a publishing
company that accurately captures, supports and encourages the African American
community. These publications will not be made to mirror white America but to
erase the stereotypes about black America.
•Rationale—detail how your remedy will take care of
the issue
This
line of magazines will display an accurate portrayal of black life in America
while at the same time be a contribution to the black community especially
women. There is a dire need for African American women to know their history
and current contributions to society. This line of magazines will provide the
support Intel and communications that the American culture needs.
•Plan – How will you go about the work, and who will
be involved?
After the proposal has been submitted and approved,
I will select a group of highly talented individuals and professionals of the
publishing industry. We will develop a list of advertisers and begin revenue of
subscribers. The staff will consist of editors, designers, writers, web design
specialists, copywriters and photographers.
